How to Research Ukrainian Roots

Introduction

This is an attempt to make a guide on genealogical research, primary focused on the descendants of Ukrainians who immigrated to the USA and Canada in the late 19th and the mid-20th centuries. Although its information will be most useful for researching the Ukrainian origins, a lot of information may be useful to anyone interested in genealogy. In addition to comprehensive list of sources, the guide includes valuable tips based primarily on own extensive research experience.

The guide consists of four parts:

  1. What The Family Knows? covers the initial phase of genealogical research, advising on working with documents of the family members, as well as capturing their stories and knowledge about relatives.
  2. Sources in the New World explores a variety of sources available in the USA and Canada. Those are useful to verify family knowledge and add missing genealogies.
  3. Researching Ukrainian Roots similarly goes through sources on Ukrainian genealogy, covering metrical books and some other sources.
  4. DNA Testing is covering DNA test capabilities from various providers.
